Preparedness Information

Readiness guides provide general recommendations to help residents prepare for severe weather events.

Readiness guides help residents prepare before, during, and after severe weather events. Because Indian Creek is an island community, residents should plan early, monitor official updates, and take evacuation guidance seriously when it is issued.

Readiness guides and related emergency information will be posted here as they become available.

Hurricane Season

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. Residents are encouraged to review their household plans before the season begins and revisit them whenever a storm is being monitored.

Your plan should include:

  • A safe evacuation destination
  • Transportation arrangements
  • Medication and medical supply needs
  • Pet care and pet evacuation planning
  • Important documents
  • Communication plans for family members, household staff, and caregivers
  • Backup power and charging options
  • Supplies for several days in case access to services is limited

Island Preparedness

Indian Creek’s island location makes early preparation especially important. During severe weather, access to and from the Village may be affected by flooding, high winds, bridge conditions, downed trees, debris, or emergency response activity.

Residents should avoid waiting until the last minute to secure their homes, vehicles, boats, outdoor furniture, gates, docks, and loose items. Preparations should be completed well before tropical-storm-force winds arrive.

Stay Informed

Residents should monitor official updates from the Village, Miami-Dade County, the National Weather Service, and emergency management agencies.

Do not rely only on social media or unofficial updates during a storm. Conditions can change quickly, and official alerts may include evacuation orders, shelter information, road closures, and safety instructions.

Before a Storm

Before severe weather arrives, residents should:

  • Review household and evacuation plans
  • Refill prescriptions and gather medical supplies
  • Charge phones, tablets, battery banks, and essential devices
  • Secure outdoor furniture, planters, umbrellas, equipment, and loose items
  • Protect important documents in waterproof storage
  • Fuel vehicles early
  • Prepare food, water, flashlights, batteries, and first-aid supplies
  • Confirm plans for pets, caregivers, employees, and household staff
  • Follow any Village, County, or emergency management instructions

During a Storm

During severe weather, remain indoors and away from windows, glass doors, and unsecured openings. Do not go outside during the eye of a storm. Conditions may appear calm temporarily, but dangerous winds can return suddenly.

Residents should avoid driving through flooded streets, standing water, or areas with downed power lines. Emergency services may be limited during unsafe conditions.

After a Storm

After a storm passes, continue to follow official guidance before leaving your home or returning to the Village. Roads, bridges, utilities, and properties may need to be inspected before normal access resumes.

After severe weather, residents should:

  • Avoid downed power lines and damaged electrical equipment
  • Use generators only outdoors and away from windows, doors, and vents
  • Document property damage with photos
  • Report urgent hazards through the proper emergency or Village channels
  • Avoid unnecessary travel until roads and access points are cleared
  • Check on neighbors, family members, and anyone who may need assistance

Evacuation and Reentry

If an evacuation order is issued, residents should leave early and follow official instructions. Waiting too long may make travel more difficult and increase risk.

After an evacuation, return only when officials confirm it is safe to do so. Access to the Village may be limited while conditions are assessed, debris is cleared, and essential services are restored.

Emergency Supplies

Every household should maintain a basic emergency kit. Recommended items include water, nonperishable food, medications, first-aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, phone chargers, hygiene items, pet supplies, copies of important documents, and cash.

Residents with children, older adults, pets, medical needs, or accessibility needs should prepare additional supplies specific to their household.
